Research Interests

My research interests are in the forces that shape the way genomes evolve. My current work is on additional codes coembedded in the DNA alongside the genetic code, and how their maintenance restricts evolution. Because Bacteria reproduce asexually, evolve in large part through lateral gene exchange, and selection on their genomes can be stringent enough to observe even subtle selective pressures, most of my research on this topic uses Bacteria as a model system.
